"Consumers are starting to use CD technology for multiple purposes at home, including preserving pictures in electronic photo albums, protecting important tax documents and making their own music CDs. "We are finding that demand for this technology is coming increasingly from home users," says Ivan Kraemer, HP business development manager Middle East & Africa, back up and storage. The speed of CD-RW drives is equal to that of a CD-ROM drive, allowing users to move up to CD-RW drives without losing performance. However, CDs can store up to 650MB of data - the equivalent of more than 400 standard high-density floppy disks, or 20,000 scanned pages of text. CD-RW drives allow users to write, re-write, store, manage and share information on a CD just as they would save information to a floppy. Both times are among the best we've seen in a USB CD-RW drive. In CNET Labs' tests, it burned a 500MB CD-R in less than 17 minutes and wrote 400MB to CD-RW in 9 minutes, 45 seconds using packet writing. The HP proved to be pretty fast (for a USB drive), too. For good measure, HP also tosses in disc-labeling software, labels, a label applicator tool, and a blank CD-R and CD-RW. The 8230e's otherwise well-rounded software bundle includes HP's Simple Backup 4.0 Broderbund's Multimedia Organizer Deluxe and MusicMatch Jukebox for encoding, recording, organizing, or playing digital audio. ![]() Advanced users might find M圜D's wizard-only interface a bit frustrating, especially when they learn that the program doesn't allow burning from or creating image files. The drive is compatible with flavors of Windows that offer USB support (98, Me, 2000), and it comes with HP's M圜D CD-mastering software and Roxio's (formerly Adaptec) DirectCD 3.01 packet-writing software. Troubleshooting and tech-support matters are covered in separate booklets, and an electronic user guide is included on CD. A poster-sized, copiously illustrated quick-start guide steps you through the process, although the eight-language format is a bit confusing at first. Installing the 8230e is as easy as plugging it in and loading the driver. The drive is a solid performer within the limits set by USB's bandwidth, and unlike some USB drives that CNET's tested, it's reliable while writing on the fly, ruining nary a disc during tests. Looking for a single CD-RW drive to share between multiple PCs? Hewlett-Packard's affordable ($199), external 4X/4X/6X CD Writer 8230e is a handy solution that attaches to any recent PC via the omnipresent USB port.
